The first check mark on our adventure list!

We went out to The Golden Spike Historical site on May 10, 2010.

On May 10, 1869, officials of the Central Pacific Railroad and Union Pacific Railroad met here to drive four symbolic spikes (two gold), celebrating the completion of the first transcontinental railroad.

Russton LOVES trains, so we took the 60 minute drive out to watch the historic reenactment. It was pretty exciting, but we did not have much time to stay, so we snapped a few pictures, grabbed a few mementos and headed back so Jesse could be to work on time.

One fascinating fact we learned about steam engines: 2,000 gallons of water will get a steam locomotive approximately 15 to 30 miles. Then they'll have to stop and fill up to get the next 15 to 30 miles. WOW!

We'll have to go again sometime when we have a bit more time to check out the trains. The great thing about this adventure is that they do the reenactment every Saturday and Holiday from May 10 through Labor day, and the trains are on the track every day of the week. If you want a train adventure, I'd definitely recommend this one. Check out their website http://www.nps.gov/gosp/index.htm for more details.

And, thus begins our summer of adventures...
